Where to visit
Out and about in Northumberland
Bamburgh and the Castle
14 miles awayBamburgh is a small coastal village dominated by a huge Castle that is open to the public all year round, (Including Christmas themed exhibitions), once the capital of Northumbria, this small village also has a fantastic RNLI museum dedicated to the famous Grace Darling and the inspiring St Aidans Church which also houses the “Bamburgh Bones”, not to mention a number of places to eat such as the ‘Lord Crewe’ or ‘The Potted Lobster’.
Wooler and Ad Gefrin
7 miles awayAd Gefrin distillery in Wooler is a must to visit, an incredible new Whisky distillery and great Anglo Saxon Museum, Distillery tours, evening meals and events all year around, truly welcoming and knowledgeable staff and some interesting and unique items in the shop (as well as Whisky and Gin). In the town visit Doddingtons Milk Bar for great cheese and ice creams or browse the many antique and curio shops.
Alnwick
25 miles awayProbably more famous for the incredible Gardens and Castle with its links to Harry Potter (don’t forget to book your broomstick lesson), Alnwick town itself is not to be overlooked, spend some time at baliffgate museum and explore the town centre, with lots of independent shops and places to eat and the famous Barter Books (Britains largest secondhand bookshop), based in the old Alnwick station it is literally a place where you can be lost in time.
Holy Island (Lindisfarne)
7 miles awayCross the dramatic tidal causeway, to explore fantastic isolated beaches, Lindisfarne Priory and Castle. Experience the jewel in the crown of Northumberland and its unique tranquillity and spirituality. We would encourage you to walk barefoot over the pilgrims way, following the wooden posts across the sands to make a visit to Holy Island a true pilgrimage experience. Why not book this with us as an experience?
Berwick-Upon-Tweed
12 miles awayHighly picturesque, Berwick is the northernmost town in England. Steeped in history and fascinating to explore on foot. We would recommend walking around on top of the old town walls, along the quayside and out on the huge stone pier into the North Sea. Berwick was a favourite haunt of LS Lowry and has a number of independent shops and galleries as well as the fantastic Barracks Museum. Three great bridges connect it with Tweedmouth on the south side of the including the amazing border bridge viaduct carrying the East Coast Mainline. Berwick also has some great places to eat out and a small cinema and theatre.
St Abbs and the Scottish Borders
27 miles awayOne of our favourite places, enjoy the beach at Coldingham Bay, maybe go diving at St Abbs (StAbbsdiving.com). Visit the lighthouse and seabird colonies or have an adrenalin filled adventure with Riptide (ribridestabbs.co.uk), finish the day with a drop off at Eyemouth and an Ice Cream of Fish and Chips at Giocapazzis. Explore the Tweed valley, the iconic chain bridge, lunch on the bus at the Honey Farm, and then an afternoon spent at Paxton House or Norham Castle.
St Cuthbert’s Way & Cave
3 miles awayWinding all the way down from Melrose to Holy Island this long distance footpath passes just 2 miles from Laverock Law cottage. St Cuthbert’s cave itself along with Greensheen hill above it are fantastic places to explore with amazing views seawards of over 30 miles of coastline, as far as Dunstanburgh castle and inland the panorama of the Cheviot hills makes this a must for all visitors to Laverock. The nearby crags in Kyloe woods and Bowden are also an excellent venue for Rock Climbing and Bouldering.
The Cheviot Hills and Border Ridge
8 miles awayWhether you want a short stroll to a café (try Ingram Café for great cakes and hospitality) or a full day’s adventure then the remoteness of the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park is a real must for a day out, Marking the northern edge of the Pennines, Cheviot itself rises to 815 metres above sea level and makes for a full days walk, smaller hills like Yeavering Bell and Humbleton Hill are equally as rewarding with stunning views and a landscape full of history. We can help with maps, route planning and also to tell you about the best cafes for the end of the day.
The stunning Northumbrian coastline
7 miles awaySeemingly endless sandy beaches are interspersed with breathtaking castles such as Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, rocky outcrops and small villages. The Farne islands are just two miles off the coast and a must for birdwatchers with amazing populations of seabirds including the iconic Puffins, and later in the year young seal pups. Boats leave regularly from Seahouses – we love going out with Andrew from Serenity Boats, (where you can end the day with traditional Fish and Chips, at Lewis or Neptunes fish Bar). The coast is well served with a coastal bus route (x15 and X18) which means linear walks are easily achieved.
Wild Swimming
12 miles awayAs well as fantastic beaches such as Bamburgh and Goswick for swimming there are also some great inland locations such as Hethpool Linn in the College Valley, or simple places just to paddle such as Linhope Spout waterfall, and Ingram Valley.
